Norilsk ya de por sí es un nombre que impone cierto respeto. Y es que se trata de la ciudad que más al Norte se encuentra en todo el planeta. Con unos 100.000 habitantes y en plena Siberia, esta ciudad es una de las más frías y contaminadas del mundo.
El panorama es desolador, no, no han explotado ninguna bomba en la ciudad, sino que la ciudad es sucia de por sí por el hecho de contar con algunas de las mayores minas del planeta. En Norilsk se funde níquel que posteriormente se exporta a Europa, América y Asia, pero esta fundición del mineral ensucia y contamina enormemente la zona.
Como hemos comentado, se trata de uno de los lugares más fríos del planeta, las temperaturas rondan entre -27ºC y 14ºC. Los 15 grados que para nosotros significan frío, en Norilsk son record de temperaturas altas –el record de temperatura mínima lo registraron en -53.1º–. Esto también supone que la ciudad esté cubierta de nieve durante unos 270 días al año.
Como en cualquier zona polar, durante un periodo del año el sol no se pone las 24 horas –casi 6 semanas– y de la misma forma durante unas 6 semanas en invierno se da la noche polar. Si lo que buscas son temperaturas extremas, este es el sitio más indicado.
En Norilsk se comenzaron a construir las primeras casas en 1920, pero la ciudad se fundó oficialmente en 1935 con la inauguración del Norillag, uno de los centros de trabajo forzado más importantes de Rusia en el que trabajaron unos 1.200 presos para construir el complejo minero-metalúrgico de extracción de níquel y cobre.
La mayor riqueza de Siberia es su tierra y lo que crece en ella. A día de hoy la ciudad aun no ha sido abandonada precisamente por eso, porque en la zona se encuentran los mayores depósitos de níquel, cobre y paladio del planeta. Además de existir también importantes minas de carbón, cobalto y platino.
En la siguiente galería podemos ver diversas imágenes de la ciudad. Algunas parecen sacadas de videojuegos o de series postapocalípticas, pero nada más lejos de la realidad. Como detalle, es interesante cómo los edificios han sido pintados de diferentes colores chillones, posiblemente para evitar la depresión y dar alegría a la ciudad, pero creo que hace justo lo contrario.
