La Administración Aeronáutica y Espacial Nacional (NASA) fue fundada el 29 de julio de 1958 por el presidente de los Estados Unidos Dwight D. Eisenhower, dejando a la agencia más famosa responsable del programa espacial civil con 56 años de antigüedad. De todos sus programas, quizás el Programa Apolo sea el más conocido por ser uno de los proyectos estadounidenses más costos de la historia, y porque fue el que permitió llegar a la luna por primera vez.
Este movimiento de Estados Unidos originó una respuesta en forma del programa Buran por parte de la Unión Soviética, el cual dio lugar a la construcción del Cosmódromo de Baikonur en Kazajistán el 2 de junio de 1955, una de las bases espaciales que mantenían (aunque estaba bajo el control de la URSS en su origen, ahora está bajo el control de Rusia). Es la mayor y más antigua instalación de lanzamiento espacial en el mundo, y de la que hoy os traemos imágenes 22 años después de la cancelación del programa Buran en 1993, gracias al fotógrafo Ralph Mirebs.
El lugar actualmente se encuentra abandonado, pero como podéis ver, se ha conservado decentemente. Muchos se preguntan por qué se gastaron entre decenas de millones y billones de dólares en un proyecto que no tenía un propósito real, más allá de ser usado como un Sistema Orbital de Bombardeo Fraccionable (FOBS), ya que solo se produjo un vuelo exitoso antes de la cancelación del programa, y únicamente uno de los prototipos construidos llegó a volar en un único vuelo.
Estos transbordadores fueron diseñados para llevar a cosmonautas al espacio pero nunca se cumplió su función. El único vuelo realizado no contaba con nombre oficial, se produjo en 1988 y duró un total de 206 minutos, tiempo durante el cual fue lanzado al espacio con éxito, orbitó alrededor de la tierra dos veces y posteriormente aterrizó. En 2002 quedaría destruido tras el derrumbamiento del techo del hangar en el que se encontraba, dejando así solo los otros prototipos que nunca fueron usados.
El imponente edificio tiene una longitud de 132 metros y una altura de 62 metros, así como unas puertas realmente gigantes por las que los transbordadores podían salir. Incluso estos siguen allí, sin ningún daño más allá de los propios por el paso del tiempo, aguardando una tripulación y un vuelo que nunca llegará a realizarse. En las vigas, aún se mantienen las grúas que podían levantar hasta 400 toneladas de peso.
